Electromobility in Germany is being expanded further

Ahlhorn | December 01, 2020

German companies are expanding their dominance in the field of electric vehicles. In 2019 over 400,000 electric cars were built in Germany. In 2021 there should be 1.7 million be produced e-cars. According to the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), around 70 models from German manufacturers are available to customers in Germany. With foreign automobile manufacturers there are a total of approx. 140 different models.

According to the Electrical Vehicle Index by the McKinsey consulting agency, German carmakers will be world market leaders in the field of e-cars and plug-in hybrids in 2020. This would overtake the current number one China.

The market for internal combustion engines is shrinking

The shrinking market development for internal combustion engines in China is currently having a negative impact on established suppliers in Germany. Sales figures rose again in the EU in October, but sales figures are falling in the Chinese market. Auto suppliers in Germany are therefore planning to cut jobs and reorganize corporate structures.

While profits collapse on the one hand, companies on the other hand have to invest in alternative drives. However, Tesla, Chinese and Japanese manufacturers started investing in hybrid and electric cars much earlier. It was only with the diesel crisis that German carmakers moved in the direction of alternative drives.

The market for electric cars at a glance

With around 1.2 million electric cars sold, China was once again the world’s largest market for e-vehicles in 2019. However, as government subsidies were cut, sales fell by approx. 31 percent compared to the same period last year.

The demand in Europe in 2019 continues to rise with over 600,000 vehicles. Germany was the largest European market in 2019, with over 110,000 e-cars sold. Germany thus had a share of 18% in the world market. In 2021, the German automaker should take over the global leadership with 1.7 million electric vehicles produced.

Tesla dominates the electric car manufacturer market worldwide

With around 370,000 vehicles sold, Tesla is currently the largest manufacturer of e-cars. The Tesla Model 3 was sold around 300,000 times, making it by far the best-selling electric car in the world. For comparison, BMW produced approx. 133,000 electric cars. VW produced 85,000 electric cars.

The electric offensive in Germany

While most suppliers in Germany complain about the risks of electromobility, there is a spirit of optimism in Bielefeld. The factory of the Spanish automotive supplier Gestamp is working on the future. Gestamp manufactures battery boxes for electric cars and supplies the VW company. In order for the change to succeed, car companies such as VW, Daimler and BMW are dependent on reliable suppliers. With the approaching end of the internal combustion engine, some companies will lose their business model, but there are also profiteers who have adapted to the changes in the industry early enough.
