Displays and LEDs – The next generation
The latest technologies at electronica 2012
Even more compact and flatter with better resolution and higher contrast – this is what the latest displays will score at electronica 2012. LED technology is also on the advance. The implementation of the EU’s Ecodesign Directive is providing new positive impetus in the market for innovative light sources. From November 13 to 16, exhibitors from all over the world will show their products, the latest solutions and the most important trends in the display and LED sectors. At the automotive Forum at electronica, industry experts will discuss displays and LEDs in the automotive sector. One of the highlights is the panel discussion “Lighting Concepts & LED” on November 14.
According to a recent Bitkom study, more than 10 million flat-screen TVs with LCD/LED displays are expected to be sold in Germany in 2012 – a new record. The next generation of displays with OLED and AMOLED technologies is already available for industrial applications and the consumer sector. LEDs and OLEDs are also gaining ground in innovative light sources. The implementation of the EU Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC is accelerating market development. Incandescent bulbs and other light sources with low efficiency have been gradually phased out since 2009. Around 173 exhibitors at electronica present the latest technical solutions, components and products for these and other topics such as automotive lighting, eSignage or industrial applications.
Touch technology and displays with compact technology
Increasingly, displays are not only providing the graphic representation of digital content, but are also replacing other input devices such as computer keyboards. At electronica, Kyocera Fineceramics and Kyocera Display are presenting the “New Feelings” touch panel for the first time in Europe, which conveys the feeling of a real keystroke on the display. Elektrosil will also be showing various touch technologies such as infrared, projected capacitive and resistive. The company will also be presenting various single and multi-touch solutions for industrial applications. In the entertainment sector, Kyocera will also be showing “Super Wide View” LCDs for extreme viewing angles with stable colour behaviour (“No Grey Inversion”) and “High Brightness Versions” with special brightness for outdoor use.
In the handheld sector, for example in portable measuring and test equipment, medical monitoring systems and industrial controls, the compactness of displays and the range of possible applications are what count most. To this end, Data Modul will present the first standard chip-on-glass (COG) display with a resolution of 320 x 240, for which only one chip is required, at this year’s electronica. The advantage of this solution is the easy and uncomplicated system integration with high resolution and contrast.
Main topic LED lighting technology
With the implementation of the EU Ecodesign Directive, LEDs will gradually become a standard in lighting technology over the next few years. Numerous exhibitors at electronica will be showing the entire range of possible applications for LEDs. Osram will be showing the latest developments in automotive lighting, entertainment and safety applications. Already available components will be on show, but also prototypes of new products “in action”.
Displays and LEDs at the automotive Forum
At the automotive Forum, various presentations will address the topic of displays and LEDs in vehicles. For example, the presentation by Robert Kraus, President/CEO of Inova Semiconductors, on “Gbps-Networking for Automotive” will deal with the use of displays in vehicle equipment. Several presentations will deal with the topic of LEDs in modern automobiles, including the presentation by Michael Brandl, Osram Semiconductors. His topic is “Emerging LED based automotive applications – challenges and solutions”.
