Deep-drawn parts made of vulcanized fiber: technology meets sustainability

What is vulcanized fiber?

Vulcanized fiber is a cellulose-based, horn-like plastic that has been in use since the 19th century. Its production is environmentally friendly, usually using sulfuric acid as a parchmenting agent, without additional binding agents—and thus without chemical residues in the final product. As a wood or cotton byproduct, vulcanized fiber is a prime example of resource-efficient circular economy. Vulcanized fiber is considered environmentally friendly because it is made from renewable raw materials such as cotton fibers and cellulose and is completely biodegradable in compost.

Application areas for deep-drawn parts – an overview

Electrical engineering & energy technology

Deep-drawn parts made of insulating materials such as vulcanized fiber are widely used in:

  • End caps and insulating covers for electric motors
    – shape-adapted protection of the windings
    – electrically insulating and heat-resistant
  • Transformer covers and coil covers
    – deep-drawn housing elements with oil and ageing resistance
  • spark arrestors
    – safety-relevant, multi-dimensionally shaped components for arc control in switchgear
  • Cable and socket shielding
    – made of heat-resistant, insulating materials

Battery and storage technology

In battery systems (e.g. in e-mobility, home storage), deep-drawn parts are used for:

  • Cell holders or module trays made of heat-conducting/insulating foils
  • Dimensionally stable spacers or housing supports
  • Encapsulations for thermally critical components (BMS, relays)
  • Mechanical cell protection against pushing through, vibration or short circuit

Mechanical protection and housing technology

Deep-drawn components offer the following advantages for technical constructions:

  • Housing shells and cover caps for mechanical assemblies
    – e.g. in measuring instruments, sensors, plug connections
  • Shock, dust or contact protection for sensitive components
  • Separating and guiding elements in precision mechanical systems
    – e.g. in medical technology or aviation

Abrasive and tool carriers

Especially Vulcanized fiber deep-drawn parts Here are classic components:

  • Form shells for fan wheels or grinding wheels
    – precisely deep-drawn, pressure-resistant, heat-resistant
  • Backing plates for flexible abrasives
    – light, robust, easy to bond with abrasive resins

Aviation, railway, defense technology

In safety-critical areas, deep-drawn parts score points with:

  • Weight saving with high dimensional stability
  • Use as insulating body in control cabinets, control units
  • Interior trim parts, especially with antistatic materials such as vulcanized fiber

sustainable product design

Due to their natural origin (e.g. cellulose or paper-based materials), deep-drawn parts are also suitable for:

  • Plastic-free packaging solutions with technical function
  • Sustainable housings for consumer or electronic products
  • Moulded parts in furniture or acoustic elements with an ecological feel

Sustainability profile & material advantages

  • 100% plastic-free and climate-friendly – from renewable raw materials
  • High mechanical strength & stability, still processable via deep drawing, milling, laser cutting and much more
  • Excellent electrical insulation, antistatic, oil and grease resistant
  • Temperature resistant up to approx. 110 °C continuously, briefly up to 130 °C (in oil contact)
  • Flame retardant, spark-extinguishing – ideal for technical applications
