Electromobility in Germany is being expanded further

Ahlhorn | December 01, 2020

German companies are expanding their dominance in the field of electric vehicles. In 2019, over 400.000 electric cars were built in Germany. In 2021, 1,7 million electric cars are to be produced. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), around 70 models from German manufacturers are available to customers in Germany. Foreign automobile manufacturers have a total of around 140 different models.

According to McKinsey's Electrical Vehicle Index, German car manufacturers will be world market leaders in e-cars and plug-in hybrids by 2020. This would overtake the current number one, China.

The market for internal combustion engines is shrinking

The shrinking market development for combustion engines in China is currently having a negative impact on established providers in Germany. In October, sales in the EU rose again, while sales in the Chinese market fell. Automotive suppliers in Germany are therefore planning to cut jobs and reorganize corporate structures.

While profits are collapsing on the one hand, companies have to invest in alternative drives on the other. However, Tesla, Chinese and Japanese manufacturers started investing in hybrid and electric cars much earlier. It was only with the diesel crisis that German car manufacturers went in the direction of alternative drives.

The market for electric cars at a glance

With around 1,2 million electric cars sold, China was the world's largest market for electric vehicles in 2019. Due to the reduction in state subsidies, however, sales fell by around 31 percent compared to the same period last year.

Demand in Europe will continue to rise in 2019 with over 600.000 vehicles. Germany was the largest European market in 2019 with over 110.000 e-cars sold. Germany thus had a world market share of 18%. In 2021, the German carmaker is set to become the world leader with 1,7 million electric vehicles produced.

Tesla dominates the global electric car manufacturing market

With around 370.000 vehicles sold, Tesla is currently the largest manufacturer of electric cars. The Tesla Model 3 was sold around 300.000 times, making it by far the best-selling electric car in the world. For comparison: BMW produced approx. 133.000 electric cars. VW produced 85.000 electric cars.

The electric offensive in Germany

While most providers in Germany complain about the risks of electromobility, there is a spirit of optimism in Bielefeld. The factory of the Spanish automotive supplier Gestamp is working on the future. Gestamp manufactures battery boxes for electric cars and supplies the VW company. In order for the change to succeed, car companies such as VW, Daimler and BMW are dependent on reliable suppliers. With the end of the internal combustion engine approaching, some companies will lose their business model, but there are also beneficiaries who adjusted to the changes in the industry early enough.

the dr Dietrich Müller GmbH also implements tailor-made solutions for accumulators in the field of e-mobility. A high degree of innovation and many years of experience in the field of polymers form the basis for supplying companies with new technologies for current market requirements.

High heat resistance, excellent flame resistance, very good tensile and compressive strength are outstanding properties of the special polymers from Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH.

Our new technology for battery separator films is based on an electrochemically stable, high-temperature-resistant polymer resin. Read more about this in our new brochure for battery separator films.
