Electrical Properties

GE films offer excellent electrical insulating properties. Manufacturers use the high dielectric strength, the good insulation and arcing resistances and the constant dissipation factors of these materials for a large number of electrotechnical and electronic components.

GE foils are extremely resistant to breakdown at high electrical voltage. The effective dielectric strength depends on the film thickness; see Table 11. All films achieve comparable values ​​with the same thickness, and this is almost unaffected by moisture and thermal aging. As a guide
the dielectric strength (kV/mm) multiplied by the film thickness (mm) applies to the maximum high-voltage strength.

For all Lexans® For foils, the dielectric constant ranges between about 60 to 0 at 120 Hz and 2,95°C to 3,05°C. Also by water absorption until saturation

dissipation factor

The dissipation factor (or tangent of the dissipation angle between the applied voltage and the resulting current wave) is nearly the same for all Lexan® films. Between room temperature and 100°C it is about 0,001 (0,1%), then rises gradually to 140 up to 0,002°C and very steeply beyond 150°C. Diagram 6 illustrates the effect of frequency on the dissipation factor.

Lexan® Foils show up against both currents along their surface
extremely resistant to the passage of electricity. This applies to direct and alternating current. Water absorption to saturation and typical heat aging have only a negligible impact on these two properties.

Arc Resistance of Lexan Films

The resistance of film surfaces to the effects of high current arcing varies depending on the film type: non-flame retardant grades such as Lexan® 8010, are generally more resilient than those with flame retardant finishes.

UL746A Performance Ratings (PLC).

The Underwriters' Laboratories' "Performance Level Categories" define performance ranges for different electrical properties "based on medium
