Environmental Resistance of Lexan Films
chemical resistance
At normal temperatures and low stress levels, GE films are generally compatible with most chemical agents found in typical home and office environments. However, films under tension - as in the case of cold formed, bent or embossed applications - are prone to stress cracking when in contact with certain substances.
Elevated temperatures can favor or accelerate this type of damage.
Some chemicals such as acetone, toluene and halogenated hydrocarbons appear soluble on GE films. For example, dichloromethane is used for solvent bonding of GE foils.
Wherever the effects of potentially aggressive or incompatible substances are to be expected, only coated films should be used.
Table 18 provides information on the general chemical compatibility of GE films. In principle, the concrete resistance to specific substances in processing and/or application should be checked in advance in each individual case under practical conditions.
If in doubt, ask for the latest test results from our application technology department.
Behavior after water storage
In laboratory tests, no significant changes in the tensile and stretching behavior of films were found after several weeks of storage in water. However, storage in boiling water has a significant and rapid effect on the elongation of Lexan® slides. The tensile strength values up to the yield point and yield point change only slightly. Long-term storage at normal temperatures in seawater has on Lexan® Slides also have little impact. Valox® and Ultem® Foils prove to be even more durable under the same conditions.
Gas and vapor permeability
The specific gas and vapor permeability of polymer films can play a major role in packaging applications. The respective permeability depends on the diffusion rate or the solubility of the gas within the barrier and on its wall thickness.
Table 20 shows typical values for Lexan® and Ultem® Foils with 0,025 mm wall thickness at 23°C.

weatherability
Permanent direct sunlight on unprotected GE foils leads to a
(wipeable) chalky coating and for yellowing. The time it takes for the change to become visible depends on the intensity of the radiation and the thickness of the film, and can range from a few months to years.
Unprotected GE films should therefore not be used for outdoor applications where long-lasting good looks and the preservation of mechanical properties are important. All GE films are generally very resistant to temporary outdoor exposure or continuous lighting with fluorescent lamps.
UV stability
Lexan® Film HP92W has a special coating developed by GE to protect against yellowing and haze, so that graphics behind the film remain legible. with
a yellowness index of < 2,5 after 1.000 hours of accelerated UV exposure is Lexan® HP92W a common choice for particularly demanding outdoor applications.
