The optical properties of Lexan® film are critical to many graphic and packaging applications. With high light transmission and low haze, Lexan® films are among the clearest films on the market.

turbidity

Haze is a measure of the percentage of light that a normal ray of light loses due to scattering in the material. Haze makes it difficult to see objects clearly behind the film and causes reverse inks to appear dull. The low haze of polished Lexan®films ensures maximum clarity and color fidelity.

yellow value

Yellowness is a film's deviation from colorlessness (water clarity) measured in simulated daylight in relation to a white reference color (magnesium oxide). Low yellow values ​​mean slight deviation from white and from pastel colors applied to the back. Lexan® films are available in special yellowness controlled grades. Light transmission

Diagram 1 shows that most Lexan®-Foils Passes 90% of visible light but is nearly opaque to UV light. This protects back-print graphics, packaged items and even the film itself from UV damage. However, only UV-stabilized films should be used for longer periods of outdoor weathering in direct sunlight, otherwise the surface tends to chalk.

The optical refractive index of transparent materials is determined based on the change in direction that a light beam experiences on its way through the sample. The index results from the quotient of the sine values ​​for the entry and exit angles (a and b) in relation to the vertical.

Gloss is based on the property of a material in some directions
to reflect more light than others, and can be determined with a gloss meter. For this purpose, a bright beam of light is projected onto the material sample, usually at an angle of 60°. 20° is also used for high-gloss surfaces and 85° for matt surfaces. A photoelectric receiver (light detector) measures the luminance or brightness of the reflected light.

The measuring device is calibrated with a black glass standard with a gloss level of 100. The values ​​for plastic are lower and are extremely dependent on the respective processing technique.

Diffusion of the Lexan films

According to DIN 5036, diffusion is a measure of the loss of vertical light transmission due to scattering. The test method is normally used when the
Scattering is desired or the turbidity readings are becoming unreliable (>35%). The diffusion of foils can be specifically optimized with structuring and special filter systems.
