NOMEX® 410 AND THE 400 SERIES

Nomex® 410 - proven product of the Nomex® 400 series

DuPont™ Nomex® 410, the original Nomex® paper, has an excellent reputation worldwide for its balanced properties and proven performance in a wide range of applications.

For over 50 years, Nomex® 410 has adapted to the ever-evolving needs of the electrical industry and remains the product of choice for a wide range of electrical equipment applications.

The paper grades in the Nomex® 400 product line, with Nomex® 410 leading the way, stand as original benchmark products for excellent performance, reliability and durability – a standard by which other insulation materials are measured.

The outstanding properties of Nomex® 410 and the other grades in the Nomex® 400 product range are based on the ideal combination of the five most important performance characteristics:

  1. Excellent flame resistance from Nomex
  2. Outstanding mechanical resistance of Nomex
  3. An excellent thermal resistance from Nomex
  4. Inherent dielectric strength of Nomex
  5. High chemical compatibility of Nomex

Excellent flame resistance

The electrical and mechanical properties of Nomex® remain almost unchanged even at temperatures of up to 200 °C and reasonable values remain even at significantly higher temperatures. In addition, these important properties are retained even after continuous operation of at least 10 years at 220 °C.

Excellent mechanical resistance

High density Nomex® products have good mechanical toughness, tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Lower density types are also flexible.

Inherent dielectric strength

With a high density, Nomex® withstands electrical stresses from 18 kV/mm (457 mil) to 40 kV/mm (1 015 mil) without further treatment with paints or resins, depending on the product type and thickness.
High chemical compatibility

Nomex® is virtually unaffected by most solvents and is exceptionally resistant to acids and bases. Nomex can be used with a variety of paints and adhesives, transformer fluids, lubricants and refrigerants.

Excellent flame resistance

Nomex® products do not melt and with an LOI of over 20,8 at 220°C (the critical level for combustion in normal air) they are not oxidizing.

Nomex® 410

Nomex® 410 is the standard grade that is suitable as a surface insulation material for almost every known insulation application. This highly compacted product has inherent high dielectric strength, mechanical strength, flexibility and toughness. It is produced in thicknesses from 0,05 mm (2 mil) to 0,76 mm (30 mil) and a density from 0,7 to 1,2.

Nomex® 411

Nomex® 411 is a lower density grade than Nomex® 410. The material is available in thicknesses from 0,13 mm (5 mil) to 0,58 mm (23 mil) and has a density of 0,3 and correspondingly lower electrical and mechanical properties. It is used, for example, in motor phase insulation and as a filler material at the end of transformer windings, where high filling mass and formability, as well as better impregnability and saturability are of paramount importance.

Nomex® 414

Nomex® 414 has similar electrical and thermal properties to Nomex® 410, but is a stronger yet more flexible and formable paper with an open surface. It is produced in thicknesses from 0,18 mm (7 mil) to 0,38 mm (15 mil) with a density of 0,9 to 1,0. The material is suitable for slot insulation in hand-wound motors, for linear wire winding and as main insulation in dry-type transformers. A high degree of conformability and impregnability are required there.

Nomex® 416 LAM

Nomex® 416 LAM is a paper used in flexible laminates for electrical insulation. It is manufactured in three thicknesses: 0,05 mm (2 mil), 0,08 mm (3 mil) and 0,13 mm (5 mil). Nomex®-based laminates are used for highly demanding electrical insulation in motors, generators and transformers. There are different laminate constructions. NM and NMN are standard grades using Nomex® paper and polyester film; for NK or NKN Nomex® paper and polyimide film are used.

Nomex® 464 LAM

Nomex® 464 LAM is a lightweight paper compared to Nomex® 416 LAM, but is also intended for use in flexible laminates for electrical insulation. The material is available in 0,05 mm (2 mil). Similar laminate constructions with polyester film or polyimide film are available on the market depending on the heat resistance requirement.

Typical applications for the Nomex® 400 Series

  • High performance insulation solutions, medium voltage and high voltage (>1,2 kV)
  • Medium Voltage, General Purpose (>1,2 kV)
  • Medium voltage, switchgear (>1,2 KV)
  • Low Voltage, General Purpose/Specialized (<1,2 kV)
  • HVT/Microwave Power
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)/Data Centers/Converters
  • ballasts
  • traction
  • welding
  • Mining
  • power conversion
