Ahlhorn is the seat of a Lower Saxony state forest office. State forests in the districts of Oldenburg, Cloppenburg and Vechta are managed from here.

Ahlhorn's economy is characterized by a large number of different farms. Two industrial areas are home to various commercial and industrial companies, some of which are of international importance. Ahlhorner Heide motorway junction

The Ahlhorner Heide motorway triangle (abbreviation: AD Ahlhorner Heide; short form: Dreieck Ahlhorner Heide) is a motorway triangle in Emstek, Lower Saxony, in the Northwest metropolitan region. It connects the federal highway 29 (Wilhelmshaven - Ahlhorn) with the federal highway 1 (Heiligenhafen - Hamburg - Cologne - Saarbrücken).

The junction, which is located south of the district of Ahlhorn in the district of Oldenburg, which belongs to the municipality of Grossenkneten, is in the area of the municipality of Emstek in the district of Cloppenburg, which lies to the south-west of the triangle. In the east lies the municipality of Visbek in the district of Vechta. The Autobahn triangle is not far from the border point between the three districts. It is about 50 km southwest of Bremen, about 70 km north of Osnabrück and about 35 km south of Oldenburg.

The triangle is also not far from the Wildeshauser Geest nature park.

The Autobahn triangle is located at kilometer 158,3 of the A 1 and bears the number 62. On the A 29, the kilometer marking begins at the Ahlhorner Heide triangle, but since the junctions are numbered from north to south, it bears the number 21.

The Ahlhorner Heide triangle was created in 1984 with the opening of the A 29 and its connection to the A 1, which was opened in this area in 1966 as the A 11. The connection point on the A 1 was partially dismantled so that there is only a connection with the northern part of the motorway in and out of the direction of Hamburg/Bremen. The Oldenburg and Dortmund routes can only be reached via the Cloppenburg junction (4,5), about 63 km to the south.

The A 29 has been expanded to four lanes in the area of the Ahlhorner Heide triangle. The A 1 has currently been extended to three lanes in the direction of Bremen and in the direction of Osnabrück. All ramps are single lane.

In the case of the "trumpet-shaped" triangle, A 1 forms the continuous relation. Accordingly, the connecting ramps of the A 29 are direct, semi-direct and indirect with only one central bridge structure. To the north, just a few hundred meters away on the A 1, is the junction "Ahlhorner Heide" on the L 870 between Ahlhorn and the B 69 to Vechta, which also bears the number 62 and forms a double junction with the Autobahn triangle.
