Polyethylene (PE) – 3 variants: PE300, PE500 and PE1000

Polyethylene (PE) – 3 variants: PE300, PE500 and PE1000

Polyethylene (PE) is a popular material with a wide range of applications. Depending on the intended use, however, care should be taken to select the most suitable variant.

Ahlhorn, January 20.01.2020th, 3 – Kunststoffhaus offers XNUMX variants of polyethylene (PE).

Polyethylene is a common plastic made in large quantities from ethylene. This produces large hydrocarbon molecules, which differ in length and degree of branching depending on the reaction conditions. Depending on this, the density and other properties of the finished plastic will vary. In general, however, these are easily deformable, impact-resistant products with relatively low strength, hardness and rigidity, which are characterized by high chemical resistance to acids, alkalis and many other chemicals. Water is only absorbed in very small amounts.

Special properties of polyethylene

The low electrical conductivity is another important feature of PE plastic. As a thermoplastic, it can be melted, for example, by injection molding or other common so-called primary shaping processes and brought into the desired shape. The thermoplastic properties of polyethylene are also used for the subsequent joining of different components by welding. PE plastic is used in a variety of fields, but its relatively low melting temperature range limits its use at temperatures above 100°C.

An important area of application for PE plastic is packaging such as plastic bags, films, bottles, etc. Also for pipes in the gas and water supply or The material is used for sewage disposal, as well as for insulation in electric cables, for the construction of various devices or device parts and in mechanical engineering.

PE in three variants

There are three high-molecular polyethylene variants to choose from at www.kunststoffhaus.de: PE300, PE500 and PE1000. Each variant can be purchased in the form of bars and plates for further processing. Further processing can be carried out by the customer, but there is also the option of having tailor-made polyethylene precision milled parts manufactured by Müller Ahlhorn.

Polyethylene variant PE300

Of the three PE variants, PE300, also known as PE-HD (“high density”), has the lowest molecular weight. Compared to the other two variants, the polymer chains are relatively short. The material is comparatively soft, easy to process and is used in container and apparatus construction, among other things.

Polyethylene variant PE500

PE500 – also known as PE-HMW (“High Molecular Weight”) – has the highest density, strength, rigidity and hardness of the three variants thanks to its crystallinity. If these properties are required, for example for certain electronic components or for cutting pads, this PE plastic is preferred.

Polyethylene variant PE1000

PE1000 has even higher wear resistance. Because of its particularly high molecular weight, it is also called PE-UHMW ("ultra-high molecular weight"). The extremely long molecular chains result in particularly high impact strength, ie this PE plastic can absorb a lot of energy on impact without breaking.

For this reason, as well as because of the good sliding properties due to the very low friction, this material is used for many components in modern mechanical engineering. PE1000 is a reliable material even at very low temperatures (down to -200 °C).
