PE films

Properties of the PE foils

Polyethylene belongs to the polyolefins. Properties of standard polyethylene are: high toughness, very good electrical properties, very low water absorption, low water vapor permeability, high resistance to attack by chemicals, resistance to stress cracking, good processability and workability.

The following 4 types of polyethylene are mainly distinguished:

  1. PE-LD
  2. PE HD
  3. PE MD
  4. LLDPE

PE-LD: Low Density Polyethylene

Due to the lower density of this polyethylene, it is lighter in weight, but has higher resilience and elasticity. The polyethylene is characterized by a soft, tough and flexible property. The melting point is around 105 °C.

Advantages of PE-LD films:

  • High tear strength
  • Resistant to acids and bases
  • Good weldability and shrinkability

PE-HD: High Density Polyethylene

HDPE has the highest tensile and tear strength and the lowest flexibility and vapor permeability. Due to its increased strength, HDPE is mainly used for thin films. The film has a stiff and crackling feel compared to LDPE. The melting point is around 140 °C.

Advantages of HDPE films:

  • Thinner films possible
  • High water vapor barrier properties
  • More resistant to chemicals and heat than LDPE
  • Not suitable for fabrics with a high fat content

PE-MD: Medium Density Polyethylene

MD is manufactured by blending LDPE and HDPE or directly as a copolymer LLDPE, combining the properties of HDPE and LDPE. It has better barrier properties than LDPE, but is more flexible than HDPE. MDPE is softer to the touch than HDPE, but stiffer than LDPE. We do not supply PE-MD films.

PE-LLD: Linear Low Density Polyethylene/ Linear Low Pressure Polyethylene

LLDPE is produced by the polymerisation of ethene and olefins (butene, hexene and octene). The material has excellent stretching and stretching properties and is mainly used for stretch films. We do not supply LLDPE films.

As can already be seen in the manufacturing process, the basic properties of the polyethylene are determined without the effect of possible additives.

The molecular structure is decisive:

  • Degree of crystallinity (degree of branching, density)
  • Degree of Polymerization
  • Mean molar mass
  • Molar mass distribution

Copolymerization with vinyl acetate (E/VA) has a greater influence on the properties of PE – especially PE-HD – than mixing polyisobutylene and rubber or PE-LD.

Colors of the PE foils: black, white and transparent

The PE films are supplied in the colors black, white and transparent. Transparent is in stock in different strengths. The white PE film is also in stock in 3 different thicknesses.

Delivery forms of the PE films

We deliver the film in master rolls, already cut into narrow rolls on disc spools or on cross-wound spools, as a blank or as a stamped part.
