Thermally conductive adhesives are epoxy-based synthetic resins enriched with fillers or silicones also enriched with fillers. Acrylate adhesives enriched with fillers are also used. In addition, adhesives based on polyurethane are currently being developed.

Fillers for thermally conductive adhesives

Fillers such as silver or other metals achieve the best thermal conductivity values, but the adhesive also becomes electrically conductive, which is undesirable for many applications in electronics and electrical engineering. In order to achieve thermal conductivity with electrical insulation at the same time, adhesives that contain ceramic or mineral fillers must be used.

Areas of application for thermally conductive adhesives

One of the main areas of application for thermally conductive adhesives is the heat dissipation of power electronics. When gluing heat sinks, the thermal conductivity of the adhesive reduces the thermal load on the component and thus ensures that the performance of electronic and electrical components is maintained.
However, thermally conductive adhesives are also used as casting compounds for measuring sensors that are used for temperature measurement. Thermally conductive adhesives are also increasingly being used in batteries.

Compared to thermally conductive pastes, thermally conductive adhesives have the advantage that they not only dissipate a high level of thermal energy, but also offer fixation and attachment at the same time.
