Share of electricity in the German car market reaches a new high

The overall market, domestic production and exports are down again

In August, 193.300 passenger cars were newly registered in Germany. That is 23 percent less than in the same month last year. 1,8 million passenger cars were newly registered in the first eight months. This exceeded the previous year's figure by 2 percent. Compared to the same period in 2019, however, a good quarter fewer cars were newly registered. The pre-crisis level on the German car market is not yet in sight.

New electric vehicle registrations rose by 61 percent to 53.400 units in August. Electric cars accounted for 27,6 percent of all new registrations. This clearly surpassed the previous high of December last year. New registrations of purely battery electric cars (BEV) increased by 80 percent, those of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 43 percent.

Domestic orders in August rose 8 percent year-on-year. Since the beginning of the year, the increase has been 7 percent. Foreign business declined somewhat in August: German manufacturers recorded a 21 percent drop in orders last month. Since January, however, 17 percent more orders have been received from abroad.

Production in German automobile plants fell again in August. A total of 133.600 cars were manufactured (-32 percent). In the first eight months, domestic production was 2,1 million. cars (+5 percent). Supply bottlenecks for semiconductors were also a production obstacle last month. Exports also fell in August: 107.700 cars (-33 percent) were sold abroad. In the year to date, 1,6 million cars (+7 percent) have been delivered to customers worldwide.
