Reintroduction of the Kaladex PEN film
DuPont Teijin Films is pleased to announce the reintroduction of high performance Kaladex polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) polyester films, first manufactured at its Dumfries facility in the UK in 1992, and are now commercially available again.
As the original inventor of polyester film, DuPont Teijin Films has nearly 70 years of experience designing, developing and manufacturing products for a variety of industries.
Mylar and Melinex branded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films are highly respected market leaders in many demanding applications around the world, characterized by reliability, durability and superior properties.
Special polymer chemistry of the Kaladex PEN film
The unique polymer chemistry of Kaladex PEN films builds on this heritage by adding several superior properties to the well-known performance of PET films such as Mylar. The resulting properties offer cost-effective solutions with an improved level of performance that sits between that of PET films such as Mylar and Melinex and more expensive engineered films such as polyimides.
Kaladex PEN film has a higher glass transition temperature than PET and exhibits better long-term aging performance at elevated temperatures. Other inherent properties are better dimensional stability and significantly higher rigidity than PET. However, Kaladex films are made using the same tenter processes, so they can be handled and processed in a similar way. They are biaxially stretched and heat set to achieve an optimal balance between crystalline and amorphous domains, offering mechanical and thermal toughness combined with toughness and flexibility.
The balance of performance and cost makes Kaladex PEN films suitable for a wide range of applications including electrical insulation, flexible printed circuits, capacitors and a range of high performance industrial applications such as: B. belts, foundry substrates, specialty packaging and various new technologies in electric vehicles, batteries and fuel cells.
DuPont Teijin Films' leading expertise in polymer science and film manufacturing technology combined with 30 years of uninterrupted experience in PEN films forms the basis of a highly attractive range of products. Dumfries' newly launched range of Kaladex PEN films are available in thicknesses from 16-125µm and are particularly suitable for a wide range of industrial, electrical and electronic applications. In order to provide a coherent product offering, the long-established range of thin and ultra-thin PEN films for the capacitor industry, available from our Luxembourg facility in thicknesses between 1,2 and 12,0 microns, will henceforth also be referred to as Kaladex .
Extended range of Kaladex PEN films
This expanded range of Kaladex PEN films from DuPont Teijin Films will open up new market opportunities in applications with technical requirements beyond the performance limits of PET, where the use of more expensive materials is not economical. Kaladex PEN films also enable lower manufacturing costs through reduced scrap, higher production yields and better throughput in critical applications. An additional advantage is the security of supply through a reliable partner.
Kaladex PEN films are qualified for multiple applications, with more options being developed. Samples of the current Kaladex grade range are available for testing, evaluation and commercial sale, with more grades to follow as market demands.
