Dr. Dietrich Müller at the 1st International Electric Drives Production Conference

(Ahlhorn/Nürnberg/29.09.2011) Electric drives, one of the most important future technologies was the focus of a meeting that took place from 27th to 30th September at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. At the 1st International Conference Production Electric Drives – EDPC, developers, researchers and potential users exchanged their latest products and production technologies in this field. Dr. Mueller presented its ArpaxX - Aramid paper.

The meeting was attended by 350 participants from across the supply chain of the production of electric motor and generator parts. Among the speakers were renowned experts such as Ralf-Michael Franke, CEO of the Drive Technologies Division at Siemens AG, Dr. Manfred Wittenstein, President of Wittenstein AG and former president of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), who referred to the challenges in the field of electric vehicles.

Topics of the meeting were application and design of electrical machines, new materials and electronic components, computer integrated environmental-oriented engineering as well as manufacturing and assembly technologies. Special importance is the electrification of the drive systems in vehicles. The automotive industry is facing the major challenge to replace  the entire conventional drive unit with new technology. In addition to the innovative approaches to the design and control of the powerful electric motors are in particular the design of the production processes and systems of high interest to open up the production in Germany. This develops value-added potential in the manufacturing of the drives themselves and in the provision of machinery and equipment.

As part of the focus, Electromobility presented to the conference of universities, Original Equipment Manufacturers and suppliers, including BMW, Daimler, Brose, Bosch and Continental, latest engine manufacturing and concepts from the field of electric drive systems for vehicles. Parallel to these issues will also be an examination from the perspective of the industrial use of electric motors. The speakers here come from the ranks of the largest German producers like Siemens and ebmPapst.

Other focal points include assembly and production. In a separate session for winding technology, experts discussed new methods such as the optimization of copper filling, to increase the quantity and variation flexibility, as well as to integrate additional process stages. In essence were the testing and production processes such as laser connection technology, the copper die-casting of windings and two-dimensional measurement of magnetic fields, on the agenda. For current challenges such as the availability of rare earths, the copper price or serial production using high performance piezo drives, some solutions were discussed. Presentations on interpretation, analysis and simulation procedures completed the program.

Accompanying the conference were machine manufacturers with production technologies, propulsion specialists with efficient engine designs and vehicle manufacturers with a wide variety of new electric vehicles in an exhibition.

Also, Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH was the only exhibitor there in the field of Electrical Insulation Material and Thermally Conductive Materials. Many customers from the electric mobility industry showed interest in the solutions of Dr. Dietrich Müller GmbH regarding the insulation systems for the drive unit, the cooling systems for batteries and the housing area and insulation concepts for battery charging systems.

From the variety of solutions of Dr. Dietrich Müller GmbH, the newly developed Aramid Paper ArpaxX was found to be of particular interest. There were projects agreed with various automotive manufacturers and some suppliers. The improved dielectric strength, increased thermal conductivity and high temperature resistance as well as the possibility to recycle waste, especially showed strong interest.
