The high-molecular compound POM is a thermoplastic. Depending on the manufacturing process, a homopolymer or a copolymer is obtained, which in turn differ in their properties. The density of this plastic is about 1.39 – 1.42 g/cm³. The melting temperature varies between 166 and 182 °C depending on the manufacturing process. However, thermal decomposition of polyoxymethylenes starts at 220 °C and above. In the long term, however, the material withstands temperatures of -40 to + 100 °C.

What properties does POM – polyoxymethylene have?

Due to the high density of this plastic, the material POM is characterized by its hardness, strength and rigidity. As a result, both the sliding and wear properties are extremely outstanding. The machinability of this plastic is very good. Chip formation is extremely low. In addition, the material is extremely resistant to heat deformation, which ensures high dimensional stability.

The plastic is neither sensitive to moisture nor does it swell when exposed to water. Furthermore, the resistance of this material to chemicals is exceptionally high. Diluted acids, alkalis or hydrocarbons cannot harm this plastic. Due to the chemical structure of polyoxymethylene, this material has a white inherent colour. Colouring of the plastic is possible without any problems.

How can POM – polyoxymethylene be processed?

One possibility to process POM is injection moulding. Here the plastic is melted and pressed into the injection mould. The high temperatures required for this process are no problem for this plastic.

Another conceivable processing method is extrusion blow moulding. As the proper name suggests, this is a combination of extrusion and blow moulding. This method is used to produce plastic hollow bodies.

In which areas is POM – Polyoxymethylene used ?

Due to the already mentioned positive characteristics of this material, it is mainly used as construction material. Furthermore, the plastic is able to maintain even narrow tolerances. In general, this plastic is used in many different areas such as the automotive, textile, electronics and food industries.

Which milled, turned and water jet parts are made of POM – polyoxymethylene?
