Strong rise in new orders in the German electrical industry
New orders in the German electrical industry rose by 49.1 percent year-on-year in May 2021.
In May of this year, 34.0 percent more new orders were received from the domestic market than a year ago. Foreign orders increased almost twice as strongly, by 62.9 percent. Here, orders from the euro zone increased by 64.2 percent and those from third countries by 62.2 percent.
In the first five months of 2021 as a whole, orders exceeded their corresponding prior-year figure by 27.9 percent. Here, domestic and foreign customers ordered 23.7 and 31.3 percent more, respectively, than in the same period of the previous year. Orders from the euro zone increased by 30.2 percent between January and May; orders from countries outside the common currency area grew by 31.9 percent.
Real, i.e. price-adjusted, production in the German electrical and electronic industry increased by 22.5 percent year-on-year in May 2021.
Cumulatively from January to May 2021, aggregate industry output increased by 10.7 percent year-on-year.
Domestic electrical industry sales in May 2021 totaled 15.4 billion euros, up 24.0 percent year on year. Domestic sales increased by 21.5 percent to EUR 7.2 billion. At the same time, foreign sales improved by 26.1 percent to 8.2 billion euros. Business volume with partners from the euro zone came to 3.0 billion euros (+ 30.7 percent). Sales to non-EU countries amounted to 5.2 billion euros in May (+ 23.4%).
In the overall period from January to May this year, aggregate sector revenue increased by 11.3% year-on-year to 79.2 billion euros. Here, domestic and foreign sales grew by 9.6 percent to 36.7 billion euros and 12.7 percent to 42.5 billion euros respectively. Revenue from business with customers in the euro zone came to 15.5 billion euros (+ 13.5 percent) in the first five months. Sales to non-EU countries amounted to 27.0 billion euros (+ 12.2%).
Business climate and export expectations continue to improve
The business climate in the German electrical and electronic industry also improved again in June 2021. Export expectations also picked up again in June: The balance of companies expecting higher or lower exports in the next three months climbed by four percentage points to plus 37 points.
