Polyoxymethylene - tough and versatile

Polyoxymethylene - tough and versatile

Plastics processing is an important branch of industry and irreplaceable as a supplier in many sectors. Knowledge of the properties of the most important plastics is essential.

Ahlhorn, February 19.02.2020, XNUMX - What is POM - polyoxymethylene and where is it used?

The high-molecular compound POM is a thermoplastic. Depending on the manufacturing process, a homopolymer or a copolymer is obtained, which in turn differ in their properties. The density of this plastic is approx. 1,39 - 1,42 g/cm³. The melting temperature varies between 166 and 182 °C depending on the manufacturing process. However, the thermal decomposition of polyoxymethylene starts at 220 °C. In the long term, however, the material can withstand temperatures from -40 to + 100 °C.

What are the properties of POM - polyoxymethylene?

Due to the high density of this plastic, the material POM is characterized by its hardness, strength and rigidity. As a result, both the sliding and the wear properties are extremely excellent. The machinability of this plastic is very good. Chip formation is extremely low. In addition, the material is extremely resistant to heat deformation, which ensures high dimensional stability.

The plastic is neither sensitive to moisture nor does it swell when exposed to water. In addition, the chemical resistance of this material is exceptionally high. Diluted acids, alkalis or hydrocarbons cannot harm this plastic. Due to the chemical structure of polyoxymethylene, this material has an inherent white color. Coloring of the plastic is possible without any problems.

How can POM - polyoxymethylene be processed?

One way of processing POM is injection molding. Here the plastic is melted and pressed into the injection mold. The high temperatures required for this process are not a problem for this plastic.

Another conceivable processing method is extrusion blow molding. As the proper name suggests, this is a combination of extrusion and blow molding. This process is used to produce hollow plastic bodies.

In which areas is POM-polyoxymethylene used?

Due to the already mentioned positive properties of this material, it is mainly used as a building material. In addition, the plastic is able to maintain tight tolerances. In general, this plastic is used in many different areas such as the automotive, textile, electronics and food industries.

Which milling, turning and water jet parts are made of POM - polyoxymethylene?

Since polyoxymethylene has exceptionally good machining properties, this material is particularly suitable for milling and turning. The Müller Ahlhorn company conscientiously processes this material into tailor-made precision parts.

For example, the milling of gears from this plastic is possible in single and series production. Water jet technology opens up new possibilities for material processing, regardless of dimensions, contours or even the material. Müller Ahlhorn supplies the automotive, electronics, packaging and solar industries, among others.
