PMMA polymethyl methacrylate films
PMMA foils
PMMA film (polymethyl methacrylate) is extremely UV and weather resistant. Compared to other transparent films without a scratch-resistant coating, PMMA films have a higher surface hardness and rigidity. With the addition of polybutyl acrylate (PBA) as an impact modifier, the films are easy to cut and process with a laser. The foils have different levels of UV absorbers.
PMMA films are either absolutely crystal clear or milky white and are available with a high-gloss, smooth, matt or structured surface. With the colorless qualities, the special light conduction properties (transmission) and the possibility of diffractive optics are impressive. They have a high weather and abrasion resistance and are absolutely colorless. White types achieve excellent light scattering effects through the use of diffuser beads.
PMMA foils can be produced with high-gloss surfaces, which are primarily required for applications in the automotive industry.
Colors of the PMMA foils
PMMA foils are available as standard in white, transparent and black. Other colors can be produced as a custom-made product using the appropriate color pigments.
Areas of application for the PMMA film
PMMA film is mainly used in the automotive industry and in the manufacture of lights. Parts made of PMMA film are used in the fields of design, architecture, mechanical engineering, prototype and jig construction or for components in automobiles such as rear lights.
PMMA foils with coating
PMMA foils can be coated using a variety of coating processes. They can be equipped with adhesives or coated with a hard coat to make them scratch-resistant.
Roll cutting of PMMA foils
On our slitting machines (makes: Kampf, Robust, Wey and Göbel) we can cut PMMA foil to small rolls from 2 mm width. These reels can be supplied as a disc spool or as a cross wound reel.
PMMA foils as a stamped part
PMMA foil can also be punched. Here we use lifting punches and rotary punches. The stamped parts can then be delivered as individual parts, stacked, in magazines or on a roll.
Laser cutting of PMMA foils
The material acrylic glass (PMMA) is particularly suitable for laser cutting, whether in a wide variety of colors or transparent for transillumination. The cut edges are very smooth and clear due to the laser cutting machines we use. Reworking is then no longer necessary.
What technology is used when laser cutting PMMA film?
Cutting with a nozzle is used for laser cutting of PMMA foil. The laser melts and vaporizes the material and the resulting gases are expelled downwards out of the kerf. Laser remote cutting can also be used for thin foils. We cut PMMA foil from 0,10 mm on our lasers.
What advantages does laser cutting offer over other techniques for PMMA film?
The laser cutting of PMMA film impresses with its high cost-effectiveness. Precise cuts can be realized in short processing times. The cut edges of the PMMA film are clear and smooth. Reworking is no longer necessary. The color of the PMMA film is irrelevant, all colors from transparent to white to black can be cut with the same quality.
Which lasers are used for laser cutting of PMMA film?
We use CO2 lasers to laser cut PMMA foil. The processing area is 2400 x 1200 mm.
Can PMMA film also be cut on contract?
We cut PMMA foil on the lasers as well as on the roll cutting machines on a contract basis.
