Electric vehicle battery and rechargeable battery solutions

The pace at which transportation is becoming electrified is forcing automotive industry engineers to innovate in the development of advanced components that can be integrated into batteries and charging systems.

Rapid advances in transportation electrification require engineers to incorporate advanced and innovative components into battery and charging infrastructure designs. Engineers focus their efforts on the following battery components and aspects:

battery cell

Battery cells are the basic unit that produces energy in any battery. Electric vehicle (EV) batteries must be able to withstand shocks and extreme temperature changes (both high and low).

battery module

A battery module contains a stack of battery cells mounted in a frame. The module has the task of protecting the cells from heat and vibrations.

battery Pack

Battery packs are built from battery modules together with control systems (e.g. battery management system (BMS)) and protection systems (e.g. cooling system).

thermal management

When batteries are charged, they generate heat that must be removed from the battery. Overheating can cause a battery to lose life and performance.

One solution for effective heat transfer in battery cells, modules and packages are stamped interface materials. the Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH produces such components (gap pads, phase change and graphite) to avoid thermal problems and extend battery life.

The Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH ensures the safety of batteries and EVs in cells and modules by preventing and suppressing the spread of heat. the Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH uses a variety of materials that are both flame retardant and meet Underwriter Laboratories (UL) requirements. For example 3M FRB and BISCO silicone foams.

gaskets and seals

The seals are crucial for the operation of battery modules and battery packs. Top and bottom cases often enclose a battery module or pack. A seal between the two housings ensures that the sensitive components are protected from the ingress of air, dust and water.

The seal not only keeps unwanted elements out, but also keeps hazardous materials inside the battery in the event of a collision. Sealing materials must withstand extremely high temperatures and often pass vertical and horizontal tests with a UL94 V-0 flammability rating.

PORON urethane and Rogers BISCO silicone have excellent compressive and setting properties and have proven themselves under extreme temperature conditions. This makes them ideal materials for making EV gaskets and gaskets.

Double-coated tapes such as 3M VHB are suitable for joining and bonding materials and sealing against moisture and dirt.

Dielectric barriers and insulators

To meet safety requirements for electrical barriers and insulation, flame arrestors and materials with dielectric barrier properties are integrated into battery components. These materials often have a dual function, serving as thermal insulation and barrier at the same time.

These materials must be lightweight, flame retardant, and conformable to meet the needs of each application. the Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH uses such materials (including ITW Formex, Lexan films, polyimide filmn and 3M EMI/EMC materials) to manufacture custom battery components.

spacers and compression pads

A battery module's spacers and compression pads must hold the cells in place. They must be strong enough to accomplish this while still being able to maintain compression with the expansion and contraction of the cell.

Spacers and pads require lasting performance even under extreme conditions and temperature ranges. the dr Dietrich Müller GmbH is one of the leading processors of various foam materials for pressure pads. These include: Rogers PORON polyurethane, Rogers BISCO silicone foam along with neoprene based foams.

Rogers PORON and BISCO are great battery cell compression pad solutions because they offer the reliability of stress relaxation and compression set resistance over a wide temperature and temperature range. As proven in NVH and BSR tests, foam pads also provide isolation and dampening of noise and vibration generated during vehicle operation.

EMC shielding

The performance of vehicle electronics and batteries can be maximized with protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI). Running a battery and connecting battery cables can often create a large EMI field that can affect the vehicle's other electronics.

Conductive elastomers, gaskets, foils, adhesive components that are pressure sensitive can help with EMI shielding. the Dr. Dietrich Mueller GmbH uses such products in the manufacture of parts for the manufacture of batteries.
